Untold Stories: Tyler Clementi’s Death and Crisis Leadership in Higher Education delves into the well-known but poorly understood death of gay first-year Rutgers student Tyler Clementi in 2010 and explains how social identities shaped the responses to his tragic death, the media firestorm, Rutgers University’s actions, and the legacy of his life and death. Drawing on in-depth interviews with Rutgers University senior leaders, staff, and Clementi’s mother, the book analyzes Rutgers’ internal and external crisis response and offers insights and recommendations for higher education professionals seeking to avoid and manage LGBTQIA and other identity-centered crises at their institutions. Untold Stories also weaves in memoir from the author’s own experiences as a queer person and a professional who has led LGBTQIA campus centers to bring to light other untold LGBTQIA stories.
